Fate/Zero (フェイト／ゼロ, Feito/Zero) is a novel written as a prequel to Fate/stay night.

Set in the year 1994, 10 years before the events of Fate/stay night, Fate/Zero portrays the Fourth Holy Grail War in Fuyuki City. Founded by the Einzbern, Tohsaka, and Matou families, this war involves seven Masters and seven Servants across seven classes: Saber, Lancer, Archer, Rider, Caster, Assassin, and Berserker.

Having seen defeat in three consecutive wars, the Einzbern family aims to secure victory by hiring Kiritsugu Emiya as their representative, despite his reputation as an unorthodox hitman. Over the course of eight years preparing for the war, Kiritsugu forms an unexpected family with Irisviel von Einzbern and their daughter Illyasviel. However, he must face six formidable opponents participating in the war for their own motivations.

Representing one of the founding families, magus Tokiomi Tohsaka seeks Akasha through the Holy Grail. Supported by priest Risei Kotomine and his son Kirei Kotomine - also unexpectedly a master in the war - Kirei becomes intrigued by Kiritsugu as he grapples with an existential crisis.

In parallel, Kariya Matou enters as a Master upon discovering Tokiomi's daughter Sakura's plight in the Matou family. Eager to save her from suffering at Zouken Matou's hands, Kariya competes for the Holy Grail to secure Sakura's release.

In another twist, Clock Tower magus Kayneth El-Melloi Archibald involves himself in the war to bolster his reputation within the Mage's Association. His derision toward his student Waver Velvet prompts Waver to enter the war independently to showcase his prowess against traditional mage beliefs.

Lastly, when a designated seventh magus fails to heed the Grail's call, serial killer Ryuunosuke Uryuu is selected as the final Master. Seeking novel ways of murder, he summons a bizarre Servant from an occult text and embarks on a spree of unconventional killings.

With each participant driven by unique motives and ambitions, only one will emerge victorious from this gripping tale of power and intrigue.
